5th RSG-Türkiye Student Symposium

The 5th RSG-Türkiye Student Symposium was held on 27 October 2018 at the Falez Uygulama Oteli in Antalya, as a satellite meeting of HIBIT 2018 at Antalya Bilim University. Tülay Karakulak chaired the meeting and opened it with a talk introducing the group.

Two keynotes followed. Dr. Tolga Can of METU spoke on “Biological networks in different repositories: what do commonalities and differences tell us?”, and Dr. Ezgi Karaca of the Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center spoke about the significance of computational biology and about the part that hard work, luck and setbacks play in a research career. Three students, selected by the HIBIT 2018 scientific committee, then presented their work.

The networking session was run as a game of bingo: each sheet asked you to find people who matched its squares, and completing a row or a column won a mug. Four students received poster prizes, three funded by ISCB-SC and the fourth a free registration to HIBIT 2019. The day closed with a career session in which Dr. Ezgi Karaca, Dr. Tunca Doğan, Dr. Ogün Adebali and Dr. Serap Erkek answered students’ questions about their own paths.

The symposium brought together 56 participants. The organising team thanked Dr. Hilal Kazan and Dr. Cesim Erten of Antalya Bilim University, the organisers of the main conference, and ISCB-SC, whose funding made the meeting possible.
